Rescued: One Bad Looking Tray!

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

I have a serious addiction love for Home Goods, and the sister stores, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. There is so much random goodness all crammed into one place!!! I mean really, it's like every store mashed into one. I go when I'm looking for something. And I go for no particular reason.

Those are usually the times when you find the best thing you never knew you needed! Especially if it has that pretty little red clearance tag on the back.

Recently I spotted a $10 goodie and decided I would try and Mod Podge the ugly out of it.

I have no idea what someone was smoking thinking when they 'designed' this tray?!? It's a gorgeous mirror tray, completely ruined with totally random art in the middle!!

Funny thing is, it wasn't clearanced because it was ugly...but because the glass was cracked. Since I planned to cover that up, it didn't matter to me.

Here's the supplies I used:

1

How much do you love that fabric?!? I plan to use it on a project in my living room...but that one is much more laborious than this one....so it waits.

First I covered the eyesore with white paper (I was afraid the image would haunt me show through the fabric):

3

Then cut the fabric into the size needed:

4

I didn't worry too much about it being a perfect fit with perfect edges. Like my kitchen cabinets I jazzed up with fabric, I always use a trim to finish out the edges and cover my imperfections. I applied a really thick layer of Mod Podge to the backside of the fabric, then carefully aligned it on the tray.

5

I used Fabri-Tac glue to apply a strip of ribbon to each of the long sides of the tray. For the other two sides, I wanted to be sure there was a clean seam on the exposed ribbon end, so I folded over a 'hem' and glued it down:

7

I'm really happy with how it turned out:

8

So happy in fact that I spent the rest of the night running it all over my house and creating different vignettes for it (Don't judge! I admit my crazy!):

Doesn't even look like the same tray, does it?

Have you rescued something from the Ugly Stick lately?

Great transformation!! I'm pretty sure the only person who would loved that 'as is' would have been wearing a sequence sweatshirt with parrots on it and blue eyeshadow!!

Just discovered your blog, and seriously went through every single post. You are a riot, and had me in stitches with your "can of happiness" chalk body line and Hobby Lobby knob aisle secret agent mission! I'm loving your home projects, and your outfits inspired by interiors! :) Just kind of lovin' ya! :)

I'm a new follower, and a fellow Texan gal! Please stop by craftsandsutch.blogspot.com when you get a chance to take a peek at what I've been up to.

That is a wonderful transformation and goes perfectly in your room, which is beautiful btw. I've used that same fabric for a tote bag :).

Seriously, I need you to go to Homegoods with me. That tray (the after, of course) is fab. I love that fabric . . . I have it in gray on accent pillows in my master!

I love that you saw the potential in that fabulous tray. I agree, the design originally was insanely odd, but look at it now!!! The fabric rocks {I am bringing in the same style in another color into my office and can't wait!}, and the tray looks fab all decked out!

xoxo!

GREAT JOB! What a difference. If you wanted a perm fix you could pour resin over it. Or if you want to change it out on a occasion, Hobby Lobby sells custom sized plexiglass in the frame shop!

Looks great! LOVE IT!
