Wait until this time of year when the fabric stores are chock full of fleece...then wait some more for the week when it's all 50% off. You don't need much yardage, but if you make them in bulk like me, the savings add up.
Then load up your shopping cart with every cute fleece you see, ignoring the glares of the people behind you at the cutting counter. (I figure I've done my time getting stuck behind the lady who wants to discuss every possible trim and backing for her quilt!)
Now's when you cross your fingers that you get a cutter in the Christmas spirit....because you only need 8"-10" of fleece for a standard scarf. (Any wider and you'll choke yourself out wearing it.) Depending on how many you're making, that's a lot of cutting! And if you catch the 50% sale, you'll score these for about $1 each!
Start with a good pair of scissors and a straightly-cut strip of fleece (you may have to clean up the cut when you get home...again, depending on the cranky-factor of the cutter).
Then just roll them up, tie with a cute ribbon, and add a candycane or gift tag!
One episode of Rachel Zoe later, and you've got a tidy pile of Fleece Scarves!
They make the best little gifts for neighbors, friends, teachers, moms....really anyone! My kids even love them. Babygirl has a Hannah Montana scarf, and my son has his eye on the skull pattern. Mr. Sugarplum will find the gray houndstooth in his stocking.
You can throw them in the washer and dryer and the ends never fray. I make a new batch every couple of years to replace the old, worn out ones. It's going to be hard to let some of these cute patterns go this year!

ReplyDeleteCute! We make fleece blankets!! We have made them every year for the senior's on our daughter's team. We make them in their college of choice' colors. I used to make spirit scarves for the cheerleaders too. A little more labor intensive then the ones you show, but they love them! You take a 6 in width of the fleece in 3 colors (school colors in this case), lay them on top of one another, sew a zig-zag stitch down the middle. Then every two inches you cut from the side in close to the stitch. Once you wash and dry them they become ruffled!

ReplyDeleteThanks SO much for this idea! So far, I've made about 24, passed the idea to my SIL & she's made about 50. For a extra special gift, I rolled the tiny bottles of perfumed sanitizers inside the scarves. For the guys, I rolled in mini flashlights. The candy cane is just the finishing touch. Now - what to do for next year!!

ReplyDeleteHi Kristina -- the scarves are only as long as the fabric is wide...unless you sewed two strips together, end-to-end. So most of mine are only 54-inches.
