Boston Cream Cupcakes

We celebrated Mr. Sugarplum's birthday this past weekend...with lots of food, a date night, and as we do every year...a Boston Cream Pie (his favorite)!

Except this year I was inspired by these to make it in a smaller form....Boston Cream Cupcakes!

They are surprisingly easy to make, and lots of fun for the kids since there are multiple bowls to lick, and scraps to gobble up. All you need are some yellow cupcakes, custard filling and chocolate glaze.

I'm a box cake girl, but always jazz it up with help from The Cake Mix Doctor. I wanted a dense cake, so I followed this recipe:

As for the filling, you're welcome to make custard from scratch, or you can let Instant Jello do the work (duh). Follow the directions on the box for pie filling, which calls for less milk and results in a thicker pudding.

Next comes the fun part, assembly! This step is much easier if your filling is really cold, and you firm up the cupcakes by placing them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes first.

1. Using a paring knife, cut a hole in the center of the cupcake, and remove the middle of the cake. Don't eat it (yet)!
2. Fill the hole with custard filling, about 3/4 to the top.
3. Slice off the bottom of the cake core (eat that!), leaving just a cake disc.
4. Replace the topper and gently pat down.
The final step is the chocolate glaze. You can make ganache from scratch, or you can let Duncan Hines do the work and pick up this 'amazing' glaze. (duh) And the product doesn't lie, it is amazing.

Within a few minutes, the glaze sets to a dense, dark chocolate.

I haven't exactly perfected the glazing technique, as mine is more blob than glaze. But whatever. You'd eat it.

Since we were celebrating Mr. Sugarplum's birthday, I assembled a little bunting with scrapbook paper, string and cocktail picks. He thought they were goal posts. Mmmkay.

The picture is borderline oogie, but trust me, we couldn't shove them in our mouths fast enough! TWSS Git in Mah Belly! And my face, hands and hair apparently (they're messy).

Yep, so good you just want to bathe in them. Now that I know the secret of getting the creamy goodness in the middle, I foresee more variations of cake and cream!

Easy Fall Centerpiece

The first day of Fall was officially last week, unfortunately Texas is late getting the memo. But even though it's still 90-degrees and we're in the pool every weekend, I was itching to start the transition to Fall decor inside.

I threw together an easy centerpiece and thought I'd share.

I picked up some new leafy stems from the Fall aisle at Michaels, and added them to my existing yellow flowers from World Market, along with some manzanita-looking branches. I rarely use faux-flowers, but stems tend to look pretty realistic.

I tied the branches loosely together to help them stand more upright, and filled the glass vase with mini-pumpkins for the added Fall vibe.

The ceilings in the Dining Room are really high, so I don't have to worry about it being too tall. I actually like it looking a little overgrown and unruly, it feels more true to nature that way.

And, um, another reason I have so much vertical space is because I had the remodeled chandelier taken down. We were having a ceiling fan installed on the back patio this Summer, and on a whim I had the electrician take down the chandelier so I could paint it again. But that never happened. I think now I'll wait to decide the chandelier's fate once I move on to the Dining Room makeover (yep, it's coming too).

So the tall centerpiece is a nice distraction to the obvious void left behind. Thank goodness for Lamp-A-Looza, or the Dining Room would be out of commission every evening. Which would reeeeally please my son who constantly objects to his piano practice.

It's a small change, but it's a start. Next step is to complete the fireplace/mantel makeover so I can get to decorating it for the season!

Off the Shelf

Thank you all so much for your kind comments on Friday's post. It's an amazing feeling to know you have friends everywhere backing you up! I'm constantly astounded by all the unexpected blessings blogging has brought to my life. I hope you know the feeling is mutual!!

The school year is now in full-swing, and life's demands are picking up. These days I'm dreaming less about paint, and more about a quiet afternoon alone at the book store! Sitting with a pumpkin spice latte in hand (aaaah, Fall!), I could lose myself in these books.





























This one isn't out yet, but it looks to be another good addition to my Book Wish List!
