{Outfit Inspiration} Black & Blue

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Always match your shoes to your handbag. And of course your shoes must match your belt. Don't wear white past Labor Day, and definitely don't wear black with brown, or black with blue. These were 'the rules' I grew up with, but thankfully they don't apply anymore. These days, anything goes, and the more adventurous you are, the more fashionable you're considered to be.

The key to mixing black and blue, is to make sure they aren't too close in hue...like navy and black. That just looks like you got dressed in the dark. (Which funny enough, is what my mom thinks of most my outfits.)

Just as in home interiors, black tones down brights, and adds refinement and sophistication to an outfit. Unlike my overuse of root volumizer that results in news-anchor-lady hair! This is Cassie Sugarplum, eye witness news!

Little Miss grabbed my glasses and busted out a pose of her own this weekend...'Mommy, this is you on your blog.' How come it doesn't look awkward on a 6-year-old? Not only did she pair black and blue, but she threw brown in the mix, too!

What fashion 'rules' do you break? Have you ever posed for an outfit picture and not felt horribly awkward and uncomfortable?!

Anyway, LOVE the skirt, I need it in about every color of the rainbow, it's the right "shape" for me but I don't see it when I click on the skirt link. Sold out?
What do you call that type of skirt? So, when I search every store in the universe for that style I don't end up with pencil skirts that look way pukey on me?
    Thanks! Love your site!!

  4. I'm all about mixing colors (as my clothes and my house would tell you). Life it too short to be beige!

  5. Love the outfit, especially with the plaid coat and green purse. Funny story - I once wore one black, one brown pump to work one day. They were both the same Nine West style shoe, just different colors. And yes, I did get dressed in the dark that day. My co-workers thought it was hilarious. Needless to say, I ate at my desk that day.

  6. Thank you Susie!! The skirt is super old, so I wasn't able to link to it...only something similar. It's the J.Crew Belle skirt, and I DO have it in 4 colors! You could probably find it on ebay (size down if you want it to fit at your waist instead of on your hips). If not, just look for a-line skirts, they are flattering for everyone...especially those of us with round behinds! :)

The color scheme has been in my head for awhile and that photo is the perfect inspiration for creating the guest bedroom of my dreams!

  13. Apparently I break the no black with blue rule ALL the time. Whoops. Totally didn't know that was a rule... I'm trying to figure out how to 'correctly' pair brown and black (without looking like I got dressed in the dark). Any tips? Mainly I have gorgeous brown boots, but lots of black clothes, so I'm trying to figure out how to make it work!

  16. Thanks Sarah! I love pairing black and brown also....but just make sure the hues aren't too close. Think camel boots with black, or chocolate brown boots with light gray. Or wear a light colored boot sock or knee sock pulled up past the boot line, to break up the boot and pant.

    Hope this helps!

And this post has to be a sign -- I'm considering a blue bag, but I always wear tons of black to work -- I am pretty sure this is a sign I need to go ahead and buy the bag. Thanks!

  30. Love black and blue together. I have a modern black leather sofa that I often wish was ... well ... not so big and black. I have been trying to figure out how to maximize it, since I won't be getting a new sofa for many years. I'm a big fan of color, especially blues. Turquoise had been my thing for a while, but lately I had the idea that deeper blues would be more sophisticated. I'm on a bit of mandated spending hiatus right now -- especially on pillows! -- so I haven't implemented my plan yet. But some swanky dark blue (but not navy) pillows are in my sights! And some throws. and some accessories.
