{Fall Craft} Fresh Pinecone Wreath

Monday, September 30, 2013

Heeeeeeeeeeey! Welcome back, lovebugs. I hope your weekend was grand! Miraculously, we didn't have any sporting events, so we spent the time celebrating the Mister's birthday with friends, family and food, and getting creative. And, of course, the series finale of Breaking Bad. Basically, my dream weekend.

Last week, I ransacked the house and all my decor stashes for items to use in our Fall Mantel. When that was done, I noticed two of the things in the discard pile accidentally stacked together, and they looked pretty cute! So I ran to my ribbon stash and a new Fall wreath was born!

I'd imagine that's how peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were invented. Or popcorn with Milk Duds. Two items accidentally meshed together, and BAM! Magic.

I made the wreath a year or so ago with fresh cinnamon pinecones from the craft store, and it still smells amazing! The gold F from Hobby Lobby represents our last name, but also works for Fall in this instance.

I looped some jute ribbon around the wreath and F, then tied the whole thing to a hook on the door. Then added a bow to the front with a second piece of ribbon.

How's that for the easiest project ever? Minus the time I spent glue-gunning all those pinecones anyway. And when I'm over the wreath, the F simply unties and goes on to live in another vignette. I like to use the wreath as a centerpiece, too, with pillar candles in the middle. I guess my hoarding paid off this time!

And remember my Front Porch makeover, including the door handles and monogrammed mat? Still looking fine-so-fine!

A little bit of nature and a touch of shine...my favorite kind of decor for this time of year. Have you ever accidentally discovered a great combo? Is there any chance you ate as much cake as I did this weekend? #noway Were you happy with the final Breaking Bad? I thought they did a great job wrapping everything up, without the use of lumberjacks.

The Friday Five

Friday, September 27, 2013

Happy, happy Friday! It's been a crazy week, but isn't it always? Hopefully this weekend has some couch-time figured in...along with the birthday celebrations for my main man. He loved all your well wishes yesterday...I didn't tell him I bribed you with extra entries to this awesome giveaway.

1) The Family Room makeover has been creeping along for awhile, but we finally finished the little desk nook that used to be an 80's hair band wet bar. I'm sharing all the yummy details with my lovebug, Jen, in my I Heart Organizing Contributor post today. Be sure to check it out!

2) Have you seen the new Nate for Target collection? It's good, real good. I came home with the zig-zag basket last weekend, and my daughter promptly snatched it up for her room. My store doesn't have much in-stock, so I may be forced to order it online. Hey Target: stock more than 2 when the collection is this good!

3) I told you about these perfect jeans last week, and so many of you have emailed or commented to say you ordered a pair...and you love them!! Could these really be the 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants'? Did you grab a pair, too? I'd love to hear what you think!!

4) I'm pretty smitten with the new Emily & Meritt Collection at PB Teen. I know I'm not their target audience, but I see a lot of things that would love to come live in my house! If my daughter sees it, I have a feeling that gold unicorn head will be one of them.

{DIY} Monogrammed Glass Jar

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

It's Hump Day again...and yes, I'm still saying it like the camel in this commercial. Well, attempting to say it like the camel. According to my son, I'm not even close, and to his horror, I just keep saying it. I don't know when I became an embarrassing parent, but it's happened. I'm sure my unnatural love of washi tape, and need to put it on everything in sight, has nothing to do with it.
"Really, Mom...you put that stuff on the keyboard, too!?!?!"

Hi Sugarplum | Monogrammed Craft Jar

For my Washi Tape Projects feature in the Dallas Morning News, they sent me a big box of the colorful tapes. Which was, obviously, amazing. But it also meant I needed a new spot to store them all. I love seeing all the bright colors, so I opted for this wide-mouth clear jar

Hi Sugarplum | Monogrammed Craft Jar

And of course, I monogrammed it...because that's another of my obsessive needs. I created the monogram using the same method as my Etched Jar.

Simple Fall Mantel

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

There has been talk of Fall all over blogland for weeks, but since we've still been pool-side every weekend, I wasn't exactly ready to dive in to the new season. (See what I did there? #punny) Then all of a sudden, we woke up to 60-degrees, and just like that, it's Fall. Granted, we're still in the high-80s by mid-day, but the cool morning means real Fall is around the corner. So I pulled out some decor, and changed up the mantel a bit.

Hi Sugarplum | Simple Fall Mantel

Halloween is big around here (see projects here), so I only use a few small touches for Fall....and the mantel is always an easy spot. I rounded up some glass vases and hurricanes, and filled them with Fall branches and pine cones, then tied burlap ribbon around the glass.

I love the natural elements and textures of Fall, and combining them with shiny metallics.

The other side of the mantel is balanced with a cluster of candlesticks, and a big bowl of pine cones and rattan pumpkins.

I may not be sipping a Pumpkin Spice Latte yet, but thanks to a little decor switch-up and air-conditioning, it's looking and feeling like Fall in here! Are you decorating for Fall? Does it even feel like Fall where you are?

Here's a few links for projects seen in this post:

Excited to share this mantel with my friend Sarah over at Thrifty D├ęcor Chick

And I just have to spread the word about an amazing opportunity from my friend Sheaffer at Pinterest Told Me To. She has partnered with Ann Taylor Loft to gift one amazing mom of a child with special needs a $500 shopping spree!! Isn't that the absolute coolest!?! Such an awesome way to honor a deserving mother.

{Organized} The Mountain of DVDs & CDs

Monday, September 23, 2013

Hey there, friends! I hope you all had a fab weekend. We had some cooler temps and lots of sunshine, so we logged a lot of park-time with Maggie. And then, of course, last night was spent glued to Breaking Bad. I can't even talk about it. I don't think my heartbeat has resumed it's natural rhythm yet.

Today I'm sharing a super simple organizing tip for the piles of DVDs and CDs. These will probably be a thing of the past within a few years, but for now, we had to get them under control. Especially the kid's movies...I swear they multiply when we're not looking.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

I thought I had a pretty good system...storing all the DVDs in cute Ikea boxes. But soon enough, we ran out of room in the boxes, and the kids had to pull all of them out just to look for one movie. Not to mention, they took up a ton of space. Not so cute anymore.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

The first step was purging all the movies they'd outgrown and we never watched. Then I ordered these CD and DVD Sleeves so we could reduce that pile of cases down to a small stack of discs.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

The discs slip right in and can be seen through the window, and the paper is surprisingly strong. They also make colorful or plastic sleeves. If a DVD or CD has artwork or a booklet you really want to keep, just fold it and slide behind the disc.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

To make finding a movie simpler, I made alphabet dividers out of sturdy scrapbook paper and stickers.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

Line the cards up when placing the stickers so you can stagger the letters.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

You can store the movies in any number of cute boxes and containers...I chose this wire basket.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

Of course I had to label the bin....so there was no confusion that it held movies, and not bananas.

Hi Sugarplum | Organized DVDs & CDs

It's so quick and simple to file and keep the movies in alphabetical order. We've had this system for about six months and it works like a charm.

And even better is we reduced this huge pile down to a small basket, that tucks away on a side shelf.

Do you have a system for DVDs, or are they taking up tons of space in your home? And what do you think about Breaking Bad?! We're watching the series finale of Dexter tonight, so no spoilers please!!
